Field & Ledger
About Field & Ledger
The business and craft of construction.
Behind every construction price is a definition of the work. Behind every drawing is someone who has to build it—and someone who will live with the result.
Field & Ledger examines those connections: how buildings get made, what drives their costs, and how decisions made during development shape their construction and operation.
It’s written for developers, owners, and the teams responsible for delivering their projects, with a particular interest in multifamily, hospitality, and high-rise construction.
We explore questions such as why contractors price the same drawings differently, what an equipment purchase commits an owner to, and how a design decision changes the working day of the people running a building.

My perspective comes from the general contractor’s side of the table: scopes, bid comparisons, buyout, procurement, and coordination.
I’m interested in the details that change a decision—and the estimators, tradespeople, operators, and owners who can help explain them.
Field & Ledger brings that curiosity to reporting, public-company research, interviews, and worked examples. The aim is to give readers a clearer understanding of what they’re approving, what remains uncertain, and which questions deserve attention.
Sources and assumptions will be visible. Illustrative examples will be labeled. When the evidence changes, the reporting will follow.
